Grand Antique Chestnut

The American Chestnut once numbered in the billions in America's eastern forests, and was considered the finest chestnut tree in the world.

As a forest tree, it was of critical importance to the forest ecosystem, and the tree's nut was the single most important food source for a wide variety of wildlife and domesticated animals alike. As a straight-grained, lightweight and rot-resistan wood, Chestnut was of major importance to rural economies.

In 1904, a fungal pathogen accidentally entered New York from Asia, and spread rapidly throughout the eastern forests. By 1950, the pathogen responsible for the chestnut blight had eliminated the American chestnut as a mature forest tree. Through the reclamation process, this beautiful hardwood is still available today.
